Caerleon was one of the most important military sites in Britain under the Roman Empire and home to the 2nd Augustan Legion.
Today, Caerleon is an attractive historic town just outside Newport where you can explore the Roman amphitheatre, baths and barracks and relax in a selection of pubs, restaurants and tea-rooms.
Part of the national Route 88 cycle path runs along the river between Caerleon and Newport.
